چکیده

Accident reports are the result of investigations into accidents that have occurred in safety critical systems. It has been suggested that accident reports can be both complex and difficult texts to understand resulting in problems of comprehension. Graphical notations have been suggested as a way to resolve these difficulties due to their concise and visual nature. However, there is no evidence in the literature to support these claims. This thesis investigates the value of using graphical representations and hypertext to help resolve complexity in accident texts, and thus, aid their comprehension. The first part of the thesis explores whether graphical representations have a role to play in aiding comprehension of accident texts. We show that accident texts are complex in their representation of event sequences. Three graphical notations are introduced Petri Nets, Accident Fault Tress and Why-Because Graphs. First, we analyse their properties to evaluate how accurately they represent event sequences. Then we use comprehension experiments to measure if they do indeed aid understanding. Finally, we observe the process of abstraction to determine the effects on comprehension. Although the findings suggest that graphical representations do help, there is strong evidence for the need for multiple representations. Subsequently, a hypertext tool is envisaged to help accident analysis using both text and graphical representations. Based on this conclusion, the second half of the thesis evaluates the feasibility of this concept through industrial research with BAE SYSTEMS using HCI techniques. A paper prototype interface is designed and evaluated further by co-operative evaluations with accident report users from BAE SYSTEMS and the University of York.

The Effect of Reducing Lexical and Syntactic Complexity of Texts on Reading Comprehension

The present study investigated the effect of different types of text simplification (i.e., reducing the lexical and syntactic complexity of texts) on reading comprehension of English as a Foreign Language learners (EFL). Sixty female intermediate EFL learners from three intact classes in Tabarestan Language Institute in Tehran participated in the study. The intact classes were assigned to three...

Salmerón 1 Running Head: READING STRATEGIES AND HYPERTEXT Reading Strategies and Prior Knowledge in Learning from Hypertext

In two experiments we identified two main strategies followed by hypertext readers in order to select their reading order, the first consisted in selecting the text semantically related to the previously read section (coherence strategy) and the second in choosing the most interesting text delaying less interesting sections (interest strategy). Comprehension data revealed that these strategies ...

Syntactic Complexity of Russian Unified State Exam Texts in English: A Study on Reliability and Validity

In this study we analyze texts used in Russian Unified State Exam on English language. Texts that formed small research corpora were retrieved from 2 resources: official USE database as a reference point, and popular website used by pupils for USE training “Neznaika” (https://neznaika.pro/). The size of two corpora is balanced: USE has 11934 tokens and “Neznaika” - 11918 tokens. We share Biber’...

The Digital Behaim Globe (1492)

The goal of most hypermedia systems is to open up complex information spaces through the use of associative networks of nodes containing texts, images, and acoustic signals. The power of such information systems can be considerably enhanced by the integration of knowledge representation. We illustrate this claimwith an example hypermedia information system about the oldest existing globe of the...
